$150 Million to Boost Food Security

An article by Josephine Maseruka posted on Uganda's New Vision news Web site reported that Dr. Joseph DeVries, Rockefeller Foundation associate director in Nairobi, addressed 'officials from 10 seed companies in Uganda during the field day of Namulonge Agricultural and Animal Research Institute recently.'

Dr. Joeseph DeVriesAs acting vice president of Programs for a Green Revolution in Africa (ProGRA), Dr. DeVries explained where and how the AGRA donations from the Rockefeller and Gates foundations would be put to use in Uganda. He said, '...the donation is aimed at causing a Green Revolution in Africa to fight starvation and famine.' He 'appealed to the seed companies to utilise the funding once the programme is launched.'

The article went on to say that 'Dr. George Bigirirwa, a plant pathologist at Namulonge, said funding will focus on training, where 170 students from the benefiting countries will be sponsored for Masters degrees and 50 for PhDs. Research programmes, the seed sector and agro-inputs dealers will also benefit from the funding.'
