The New York Times Company Establishes Nonprofit Excellence Awards

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 21, 2006--The New York Times Company announced today that it has created a new awards program, The New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Awards, to recognize outstanding nonprofit organizations based in and serving the communities of New York City, Long Island and Westchester. Applications are now being accepted through Jan. 29, 2007; awards will be presented to four organizations in June 2007. Information about the program is available at www.nytimes-community.com.

The awards will recognize management excellence in the following areas: meeting emerging needs or serving emerging communities; sustained impact; communications; and general excellence. The winner of the general excellence award will receive $25,000, while the three other awards are each $5,000. Additionally, the organization that wins the general excellence award will receive a scholarship of $4,500 to the Columbia Business School Executive Education Institute for Not-for-Profit Management.

The Times Company is working with the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York (NPCC) and the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers (NYRAG) on the program and will consider applications from any New York State nonprofit organization operating in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Nassau County, Suffolk County or Westchester County.

"Our goal for this new awards program is to highlight the enormous contributions made by the nonprofit sector in the New York area," said Diane McNulty, executive director of community affairs and media relations, The New York Times. "By underscoring the management excellence of four specific organizations, we hope to raise awareness of the entire nonprofit community and the critical role it plays in our society. We are very grateful to our collaborators on this project, the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York and the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers, and to the stellar selection committee that will choose the winners."

"We are very excited to bring this program to nonprofits in the New York City area," said NPCC president Michael Clark. "NPCC believes this is a great opportunity for the public and for nonprofits themselves to learn more about the challenges of managing nonprofits in a truly excellent way."

"A vibrant and well-managed nonprofit sector is fundamental to the work of philanthropy," said NYRAG Board Chair Karen Rosa, vice president and executive director of the Altman Foundation. "As a co-sponsor of these awards, NYRAG is proud to celebrate, learn more about, and help build management excellence among our nonprofit partners, whose success is so deeply intertwined with our own."

A selection committee of leaders from the nonprofit community will consider applications, evaluate finalists during site visits and make the final determination of winners. Committee members include:

Mr. Walker will serve as the chair of the selection committee, which does not include any representatives from the Times Company, NPCC or NYRAG.

An advisory committee was also formed to provide support and counsel throughout the development of the program. The advisory committee includes:

The four awards, which are intended to honor nonprofit management excellence rather than program content, will be presented at a special event at the Times Company's headquarters in June 2007. At the event, each of the winners will conduct a "best practices workshop," featuring management strengths, ideas and strategies identified through the awards program selection process.

Additional financial and in-kind support is being provided by other funders, including the New York Community Trust and RSM McGladrey, Inc.
